Author and historian Dale McIntosh pairs with restoration expert Rick Nelson to provide this bible of authenticity on the legendary 1970, 1971, and 1972 Chevelle models. Everything about restoring your Chevelle back to bone-stock is covered meticulously, including step-by-step instructions for chassis and interior restoration. Understanding date variances on parts applicable to the build date of your Chevelle is vital to a factory-correct restoration, and including them in this book provides a depth of coverage on these cars that is unequaled.

Body Disassembly

This is one of the preferred methods of lifting a body off a frame because it is quick and easy. It is always a good idea to have a rotisserie jig or some stand ready to support the body once you roll the chassis out from underneath.

Chassis, Suspension and Brakes

A very common sight on 50-year-old frames is rusted body-mount holes. These must be repaired for proper body alignment and safety. The area around this rust is too thin and cannot support the body safely.

Engine and Driveline

Engine blocks often have their intended suffix code painted on them in one or more locations at the Tonawanda engine assembly plant. The “CRV” here indicates an LS6 engine to be equipped with the manual 4-speed transmission.

Restoring a 1970-1972 Chevelle back to concours correct takes a certain amount of expertise. Thankfully, Rick and Dale have done a lot of the heavy lifting on the research side. With this authenticity guide, you can be confident that you have all the correct components and options accurately and expertly represented for your stock restoration.

Printed circuit board configurations vary with their use: a gauge-optioned dash will have a different printed circuit board than one with warning lamps. Note all the dash lamps (the round black sockets) are fed from the circuit board as opposed to the old method of a wire to each lamp.

When disassembling the interior, leave no area unchecked when looking for factory documentation or other potential story-telling artifacts. Build sheets and broadcast sheets can be found in many locations within the interior, so take your time and look before tearing anything apart.

Body Restoration

All plants were fairly careless with the paint application with regard to oversprays. This will carry over onto areas such as the rocker floor area, the tail panel, wheelhouses, and firewall ends. How much if any that you apply will be strictly up to you or your restorer.
